What the sources agree on
The Izmir provincial culture and tourism directorate defines the windy season as May to October, with the wind blowing from the north from mid-June until mid-September and usually from the south from October to April. National promotion body Go Türkiye puts typical strength at 15 to 25 knots in season, and Surf Magazin adds that gusts can exceed 30 knots, especially outside high summer. On the water, Sun Surf Alacati names June, July and August the strongest months, and ION Club recommends May, June, September and October for those who prefer lighter wind.
Month by month
| Month | Typical wind | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| January to March | Southerly systems, variable strength | Off-season. Frontal winds can be strong but are irregular; schools are closed and the town is quiet. |
| April | Southerly, turning variable | Transition month. Town life restarts with the Herb Festival; the bay sees early sessions on good days. |
| May | Season opens, lighter northerlies | Schools reopen. Lighter wind and empty water favor learners; wetsuits still sensible. |
| June | Meltemi building from mid-month | The steady northerly settles in around mid-June. Conditions strengthen week by week. |
| July | Peak meltemi | Strongest, most consistent wind of the year alongside August. Book gear and rooms well ahead. |
| August | Peak meltemi | High summer: reliable afternoons in the 15 to 25 knot band, busiest water and town. |
| September | Northerly, easing after mid-month | Many riders' favorite: warm sea, dependable wind early on, thinner crowds. |
| October | Turning southerly, lighter | Season winds down. Good-value stays; rideable days still come, but less predictably. |
| November, December | Southerly systems | Off-season again. Storm fronts bring wind without schedule; most schools are shut. |
Treat the table as climatology, not a forecast: individual weeks vary, and serious riders should check a live forecast for the bay in the days before travel. The directional pattern, north in summer and south in winter, is the stable part.
Reading the daily wind cycle
Within the meltemi season the daily rhythm matters as much as the calendar. Mornings start lighter, the wind builds toward early afternoon and peaks before easing at dusk, which is why schools put beginners on the water before noon and advanced riders plan around the afternoon peak. Swimmers can use the same rhythm in reverse: calm mornings at the bay or the coves, then a move to sheltered Ilica when the whitecaps arrive.
Matching month to hotel strategy
July and August combine peak wind with peak demand, so gear reservations and stone hotel bookings both need lead time. June and September buy you most of the wind with less of the squeeze. May and October are the value plays: lighter conditions, low rates and a calm town, well suited to learners, as the season guide details. Whenever you come, the airport run is the same hour-long hop described in Izmir airport to Alacati.
